Gouda pottery ewer, model 116, with P-decor by Theo Leeuwendal from 1901-1907

Description

This ewer was made by the Dutch pottery factory Zuid-Holland from Gouda in the period between 1901 and 1907. The object is 21.5 cm or 8.5 inch high and 12 cm or 4.7 inch wide. This is model 116 from the Gouda pottery factory. The ewer is made in a striking white earthenware. The object also has a beautiful shine, which you do not see much on Gouda pottery with a P decor. You can clearly see that the Zuid-Holland factory attempted to give the jug the appearance of porcelain. That’s not surprising. The P-decor was introduced to the market by Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland in 1901 to compete with the very popular and expensive eggshell porcelain from Rozenburg.
The ewer is well signed with the words: Made in Zuid-Holland, the designation for the decor: p/b, and the signature of Leewendal. The object is in very good condition, except for a chip on the front of the base ring. Furthermore, the ear and beak are completely intact. The ewer has a beautiful pattern of craquelure.
