Description
This vase was made by the Dutch pottery company Zuid-Holland from Gouda in the period 1902-1907. It is a large vase of 32.4 cm or 12.7 inch with a long neck and a round belly of 16 cm or 6.3 inch in diameter. The vase is painted by Michel van der Heidt and has a P-decor. This so-called ‘porcelain decor’ was introduced in 1901 to compete with the very popular and expensive eggshell porcelain of the Rozenburg factory in The Hague. The P-decor was introduced in different versions, this is the decor: P/B. You see brown flowers (probably orchids) on a green background. The vase also has some red colour areas, which have come out of the oven less vibrant. Typical for the P-decor is that the vase is painted with fine lines and dots. That is why this decor is also called ‘kantjes’. Both the model (317) and the decor are not very common. The vase is well signed with the words: Made in Zuid-Holland around the factory logo (Lazarus gate) and the signature of Michel van der Heidt (vdH). You can also see a reference to the decor: P/B. The vase is not completely intact. The front of the neck has had a knock and there is a little crack in the rim. And the foot has two chips and some irregularities on the edge.
