Description

This pair of vases was made in 1897 in the Dutch town of Purmerend (near Amsterdam) by the Firma Wed. N.S.A. Brantjes & Co. This is model 1029, two slender vases of respectively 19.5 (7.6 inch) and 19.7 cm (7.7 inch) high. Both vases are 7.5 cm (2.9 inch) wide. The vases are decorated with cornflowers in blue and grey-blue tones, against a stone-red background. Striking are the yellow cartouches in which figures are painted with fine black lines that look like embroidery. You also see such patterns on other Brantjes vases (see photos). It concerns a decor with the indication: E. The vases are well signed. You see the logo of the factory, the clog with the monogram of Nicolaas Brantjes: NB. Also the brand name: Faience de Purmerende, Hollande. You see the marking for the model: 1029 and the decor: E, just like the date letter B for 1897. Both vases are signed by an unknown painter with the monogram: LA. Both vases are in good condition. One is completely intact. The other has a minuscule flake on the edge, where a piece of glaze is missing. It was too small to photograph.
