Description
These vases were made by the firm Wed. N.S.A. Brantjes & Co. from Purmerend between 1895 and 1904. They have a very extraordinary wrenched design, which gives the vases a twisted appearance. Three long grooves extend from the neck to the foot, creating a twisted effect. This creates bulges and indentations in the vase’s body. Very beautiful! This pair is design number 1093 and is also depicted in the book “Purmerends Jugendstil Aardewerk 1985-1907” on page 108. Both vases are 31 cm or 12.2 inch high and 10.5 cm or 4.1 inch wide. The vases are decorated with a magnificent motif of butterflies, water lilies, and arrowhead (leaves and flowers) in a colour palette of dark blue, turquoise, yellow, brown, and green. Only one of the vases is signed. The vase is marked on the bottom with the factory name: Faience de Purmerende Hollande. You can see the “NB” and the “little clog” (factory logo) as well as Jacob Vet’s signature: JV. Interestingly, the vase is marked with the incorrect model number: 1040. You can also see a “C” and an “A,” presumably a date and decoration letter. One vase of the set is in pristine condition. The other has had a restoration on the neck in the past, but this is barely visible (see photo).
