Description

This large flowerpot or ‘cachepot’ was designed by the Dutch ceramic artist Bert Nienhuis for De Distel in Amsterdam. The cachepot is 21.5 cm or 8.4 inch high and 28 cm or 11 inch wide and made around the year 1905. This is model 181, a cachepot or flowerpot with a narrow base and a wide neck. Designer Bert Nienhuis is known for his distinct decorative style, characterized by patterns of fairly clean, geometric motifs, applied in a limited number of colours against a white background. This cachepot is painted in a beautiful palette of very dark green and light brown. Unlike many light-coloured Distel objects, this cachepot is not created with a matte finish, but it has a high-gloss glaze. The pot is sparingly marked with the De Distel factory stamp. The object is in very good condition, considering its age. A clear pattern of craquelure is visible. The rim has a hairline crack that is visible both inside and out.
