Description

This tile tableau by the Dutch pottery factory Rozenburg from Den Haag (The Hague) comprises no fewer than 35 tiles. It depicts Haarlem’s city center with a view of St. Bavo’s Cathedral. The tiles were painted by Daniel Harkink, based on an artwork by Johannes Christiaan Karel Klinkenberg. Klinkenberg (1852-1924) was painter from The Hague specializing in cityscapes. Daniel Harkink (1862-1953) was a pottery painter best known for his tile and tableau paintings. Harkink worked at Rozenburg from 1883 to 1900. This object is a perfect example of Harkink’s talent. The tableau is polychrome and features a beautiful palette of warm colours. The street scene, with the cathedral in the background, is composed of 35 tiles. At the bottom left, you can see Harkink’s signature: DV and Klinkenberg’s name. At the bottom right, a tile is marked: Rozenburg Den Haag. Each tile is 15.5 cm (6.1 inch) high and wide. The entire piece, including the original frame, is 134 cm (52.7 inch) high and 102 cm (40 inch) wide. The tiles are all in very good condition. No cracks, chips, or restorations have been observed. On the back, you can see that all the tiles are marked with a number (1 through 35) and the number: 337. This is likely a work order number.
