Description
This pair of vases was made by the Dutch porcelain factory De Kroon from Noordwijk. This factory only existed for a very short time, between 1906 and 1909. De Kroon was founded by Egbert Estié, who had previously been involved as a business manager in the pottery factory of the Widow Brantjes in Purmerend and the famous pottery factory Zuid-Holland from Gouda. Estié hoped to gain success again in the ceramic industry in Noordwijk and involved big names, such as designer Henri Breetvelt. Unfortunately, the factory was only short-lived and ceased production in 1909, a year later the factory went bankrupt. This led to only a small production and De Kroon vases are therefore very rare and rarely come on the market. These vases bear a decoration by Henri Breetvelt, it is an abstract floral decor with orchid-like flowers in the color palette of black, yellow, blue, red and green that is so characteristic of De Kroon. The vases have are signed as model 6-1. Model 6 has a slightly convex cylindrical shape and the ‘6-1’ is a reference to the size. These vases are 31.7 cm high and 12 cm wide. The vases are well signed with the words: Noordwijk Holland and the symbol of a crown. You can also see a reference to the model 6-1 and the decor: 1. Both vases are signed. One by Theodoor Leeuwendal and the other by Konrad Mertens. The pair is in beautiful condition. One of the vases is completely intact. The other has been very professionally restored to a small chip at the foot (photos of the damage are available and can be requested). Nothing of this can be seen anymore. A striking detail is that both vases have very subtle differences in their colour scheme. A similar pair of vases can be seen in the Museum Oud Noordwijk in Noordwijk.
