Description

This wall charger was made by Dutch pottery factory Zuid-Holland in Gouda, between 1899 and 1901. The object is size 3, with a diameter of 21 cm or 8.2 inches. The wall plate is beautifully painted with a fuchsia decoration: purple calyxes with hanging stamens and yellow flower buds. The flowers are surrounded by a wreath of leaves, which are placed in an elegant circle. The colour combination is particularly attractive, with green, yellow and purple on a background of white, light green and dark turquoise. This is the work of Willem Wolbers van Doornen, who worked at the Gouda plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland from 1899 to 1902. This can be seen by his signature: WW. On the back of the plate you can see the words ‘Made in Zuid-Holland’, as well as the logo in the shape of a little house. Also visible are a number of impressed marks, originating from the manufacturer of the original, still unpainted plate: the Waechtersbacher Steingutwerken from Germany. Until 1901, the Gouda factory obtained its plates from this German producer. The mark includes the size (3) and the year of production (1899, indicated with ‘U’). This makes it clear that the plate was produced between 1899 and 1901. The wall charger is part of a set (see last photo). They are available separately or together. The other plate from the set can be seen here. This plate is (just like the other one) in mint condition.
