Description
These candlesticks were made by The Dutch pottery company Zuid-Holland from Gouda. It is model 78, a model with a wide base, a curved body and four elegant ears that hold up the candle holder. You also see this model with a straight body (see photos). They are 29.5 cm or 11.6 inches high and the base has a diameter of 13 cm or 5.1 inches. The top has an opening of 2.5 cm or 1 inch, slightly wider than regular candles (2.3 cm or 0.9 inch). These candlesticks are painted in a beautiful decor with black, purple, burgundy and lilac on an olive green background with bright green details. The pair is signed by master painter Johannes Hartgring. What is striking about this pair of candle holders is the decor in relation to its age. The decor looks very modern for the time in which it was made. The pair was made before 1908. Between 1900 and 1908, Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland mainly made many objects with typical Gouda decors, in dark colour combinations. These candlesticks have a similar design, but here the colours are much more vibrant and that very bright green has been added. Perhaps an artistic experiment by Johannes Hartgring. The candlesticks are in very neat condition. Both objects had some small chips on the neck and base ring. But they have been expertly fixed after restoration. All arms of both objects are still completely intact.
