Description
This pair of vases was made by the Dutch pottery factory Zuid-Holland in Gouda between 1899 and 1902. This is model 108, a cylindrical design measuring 26.4 cm (10,4 inch) in height and 11 cm (4.3 inch) in width. Both vases are painted with a typical early Gouda design featuring green leaves and purple flowers. The influence of Art Nouveau is clearly visible in this design, in the use of flowing lines and the whiplash motifs. A striking feature of this set is the continued use of the dark brown clay in the design, serving as a background. The vases are clearly marked. Both vases bear the factory name: Made in Zuid Holland, the Lazarus gate, and the signatures of Adriaan Lansaat (AL) and Michel van der Heidt (vdH). The vases are in excellent condition. One is pristine, except for a small missing glaze (not damage, but a firing flaw). The other had a tiny chip on the neck, but this has been neatly restored, and it is now completely gone.
