Description
This vase was made by the dutch pottery company Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland from Gouda in the period 1900-1902. It is model 166, a wide vase with a very bulbous body and a bulge in the neck. It is reminiscent of the shape of a gourd. The vase is 25.5 cm or 10 inch wide and 22 cm or 8.6 inch high and painted with a beautiful early Gouda decor featuring purple and yellow tulips against a light background at the neck and a dark blue background at the base. You can clearly see the influences of Art Nouveau here, with the swirling lines in the design. The painter is Christiaan Lanooy, who worked for a short period at the Gouda pottery factory Zuid-Holland. The vase is clearly marked with the words: Made in Zuid-Holland. Furthermore, on the bottom you can see the factory logo in the shape of the Lazarus Gate, and Lanooy’s signature: CJL. The model number 166, is also stamped on the base. The vase is in good condition. The neck, body, and rim of the foot are intact and unrestored. The defect is only visible if you turn the vase up side down. The bottom has a dent, and due to tension, a crack has formed on the underside of the foot’s inner ring. An added benefit: if the vase is placed upright, this is not visible at all. This vase comes from the Meentwijck Collection, one of Holland’s most renowned Art Nouveau and Art Deco Collections.
