Description
This vase was made by the Dutch pottery company Zuid-Holland from Gouda between 1908 and 1914. This is model 565, a vase of 26.3 cm (10.3 inch) high and 17 cm (6.7 inch) wide with a large open neck. The vase is painted with a NP (New Porcelain) design featuring yellow flowers and green leaves, against a background consisting primarily of stars and dots. It creates a colourful and cheerful ensemble! The NP-design was introduced in 1908 as a successor to the popular P (Porcelain) design. The P-design (also known as ‘Kantjes’) was often composed entirely of small, wavy lines and dots, making it very labour-intensive. Its successor was called NP (New Porcelain). The designs were just as colourful against the white biscuit, but contained larger areas of colour and slightly less detail and finesse. With NP-decors, you often see that the entire vase doesn’t have the same decor, but the back is often more sparsely painted. This is also the case with this vase. The back only contains a few branches and lacks the large flowers of the front. The vase is clearly marked with the words: Holland and Gouda. You can also see the logo of Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland, the little Lazarus Gate. Furthermore, see the name of the decor: N.P., the model number: 565, and the signature of an unknown artist: z.z. The vase has some slight discoloration around the neck and a chip at the bottom of the base. Fortunately, this is on the back.
