Large Rozenburg vase, model 71 of 45 cm with dune landscape and tulip fields from 1894
Large Rozenburg vase, model 71 of 45 cm with dune landscape and tulip fields from 1894, painted by W. Mansveld.
Description
This impressive vase was made by the Dutch pottery factory Rozenburg from The Hague in 1894. It is a large one of 45.5 cm or 17.9 inch high, which is known in the books as a ‘Japanese vase’. At first I did not immediately recognize the decor as that of Rozenburg. The colours are vibrant and the palette is much lighter than typical Rozenburg objects from the end of the nineteenth century. The decor is reminiscent of the work of Henri Breetvelt, but he was never involved with Rozenburg and started creating his unique and abstract designs almost 20 years later. The landscape looks a bit Mediterranean, as if the decor is a tribute to the French painter Cézanne. But if you look closely, you will see different tulips on the foot of the vase. The stripes in the landscape are the tulip fields and the slopes above them are the dunes, complete with Scots pines and bushes. The vase was painted at the beginning of 1894 by W. Mansveld. He probably got his inspiration, not far from The Hague in the Dutch tulip region to the north of the city. The vase is model 71 of 45.5 cm or 17.9 inch high and 28 cm or 11 inch wide. The object is well signed with the logo of the Rozenburg factory in The Hague, the year letter L for 1894 and the work order number: 8. The vase is in a neat condition. Two little chips on the neck have been professionally restored, as well as a little chip on the foot.
