Description
These vases were made by the Dutch pottery factory Zuid-Holland from Gouda between 1900 and 1905. This is model 138 with handles, two vases measuring 25.3 cm ( 9,9 inch) high and 15.5 cm (6.1 inch) wide. Both vases are painted by Hendrikus Houdijck in a typical early Gouda design with purple flowers and green leaves, against a beige background. This beige background is particularly common in early Gouda objects. In fact, the original colour of the clay is visible here, and parts of the vase are not covered with pigment (though they are glazed). The vases are clearly marked with the words “Made in Zuid-Holland” and “Lazaruspoortje” (Little Lazarus Gate). Furthermore, the model number 138 is scratched under the base of both vases, and Houdijck’s signature: HH. The vases are in very good condition. One of the two has a stress fracture under one of the arms. This is visible, but well hidden. Otherwise, the vases are in mint condition.
