Description
This vase was made by the Dutch Pottery firm Wed. N.S.A. Brantjes & Co. from Purmerend in the period 1895-1904. This is model 504, a very rare model that rarely comes onto the market. Only two pieces are listed in the book ‘Purmerends Jugendstil Aardewerk 1895-1907’. This is a bottle-shaped vase with a broad body that tapers into a narrow, almost straight neck. The vase is 34.6 cm or 13.6 inch high and 19.5 cm or 7.6 inch wide. The vase is sparsely signed with the model number: 504. A ‘B’, presumably the decoration number and the signature of Chris Lanooy. A striking detail is the addition of an N. after the well-known monogram C.J.L. Lanooy worked for the Purmerend pottery factory Brantjes for a short period in 1904. The vase is beautifully painted with a decoration of clematis in a striking colour combination of beige, green, brown, gray, yellow, and turquoise. In some areas, low down on the body, this turquoise glaze has run slightly. This occurred during the firing process. There are a few glaze imperfections (firing flaws) on the neck. Otherwise, the vase is in perfect condition.
