Description
This vase was made by the Dutch pottery firm Wed. N.S.A. Brantjes & Co. from Purmerend in 1898. The vase is tall and narrow, 40 cm (15.7 inch) and 18.5 cm (7.3 inch) respectively. This is model 1055, a bottle-shaped vase with two elegant handles. The vase is painted with pattern B, a pattern featuring chestnut leaves and chestnut blossom, against a dark brown, yellow, and turquoise background. Model 1055 is a well-known model from the Purmerend pottery Brantjes, but you rarely see them with handles. And, importantly, the handles on this object are completely intact. The same applies to the rest of the vase: in perfect condition. The vase is well signed. You can see the name of the factory under the base: Faience de Purmerende Hollande. The clog and the letter NB (for Nicolaas Brantjes), the model number: 1055, the decor code: B, and an additional D, which is probably the date mark for 1898. The signature AP is difficult to read; it is unknown to which pottery painter this signature belongs. This vase used to be part of the Meentwijck Collection a famous Dutch collection of Art Nouveau object’s d’art.
