Description
This vase was made by the Dutch pottery company Firma Wed. N.S.A. Brantjes & Co from Purmerend in the period between 1895 and 1904. The vase has a very well-known model, but an unknown decoration. The vase, model 1017, is a bottle-shaped vase with a very round belly of 21.5 cm or 8.4 inch high and 17 cm or 6.7 inch wide. There have been various decors for this model, which were usually indicated with a letter. Because the markings at the bottom of the vase are missing (which happens more often with Brantjes pottery), it is not clear which decoration it concerns. In any case, the decoration is somewhat more symmetrical and less graceful than we know from the Purmerend factory. This is probably an experiment or a test copy. The decoration is also not depicted in the book ‘Purmerend Jugendstil Aardewerk 1895-1907’. The vase is painted with a cobalt blue background colour on which a flower is painted on various sides of the vase with green, yellow and brown colours. The vase is further signed with AB (unknown painter) and has an illegible marking. There is also a ‘W’ stamped in the bottom. The vase is in a beautiful condition.
