Description

This vase was made by the Dutch pottery company Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland from Gouda during the period 1900-1902. This vase is model 171, a wide vase with a narrow neck and an enormous handle surrounding it. The vase was painted by Willem Wolbers van Doornen in a typical early Gouda decoration featuring purple tulips on a beige background at the neck and a dark blue background at the base. Striking details are the very thin, light yellow lines near the neck and the beautiful flowing patterns on the sides of the vase, which align so well with Art Nouveau or Jugendstil. The vase is clearly marked on the bottom. You can see the words: Made in Zuid-Holland, the factory logo in the shape of the Lazarus Gate, and the signature of Wolbers van Doornen: W. The model number 171 is also scratched into the base. The vase is 24.5 cm or 9.6 inch high and 23 cm or 9 inch wide and is in neat condition. Unfortunately, the handle was broken. This break was neatly and very professionally restored in the past. Elsewhere in the shop is a vase of the same model (171), executed in a P-decor.
