Description
This wall charger was made by the Zuid-Holland pottery in Gouda. At first glance, you wouldn’t immediately guess this, as the plate bears a great resemblance to other Dutch pottery factories, such as Holland Utrecht or Brantjes. It is a very early example of Gouda pottery, made in 1898 or 1899 and painted by Chris Lanooy. The plate is 33 cm or 10.6 inch in diameter (model 35) and features a decoration of blue flowers (wild roses or Tudor roses) and green leaves, against a yellow background. This yellow decoration is not uniform, but consists of a pattern of small circles. It’s very interesting to compare this wall plate with another plate in the collection, from the ‘Holland’ factory from Utrecht. You see virtually the same decoration and composition, only the colour scheme is completely different. It’s clear that there was some influence here. In the early years of production at Zuid-Holland pottery, they carefully observed what the competition was offering. And this object is virtually a copy of the Holland Utrecht wall charger. If you look closely, you’ll see that the inspiration for this decor was again drawn from the style book: Les Plantes et ses Application Ornamentales by Eugène Grasset from 1896. The wall charger is in very good condition. However, there are some glaze imperfections on the rim. And the bottom has a small chip on the foot ring.
