Description
This tile panel was painted by Daniël Harkink for the Dutch pottery company Zuid-Holland from Gouda, between 1901 and 1907. Daniël Harkink chose the work of Johannes Bosboom, renowned for his church interiors, as his inspiration. A striking detail is that Harkink painted a similar scene during his working years at the Rozenburg pottery in The Hague, but on a tile tableau, not a single tile panel like this one. This tile panel is 60 cm (23.6 inch) high and 40 cm (15.7 inch )wide and is framed in a beautiful (and heavy!) antique decorative frame. The frame is completely boarded up on the back, so it is unknown whether the tile panel is signed on the back. It certainly is on the front. At the bottom left, you can see the words: DH after Bosboom, and at the bottom right, you can see the Lazaruspoortje (little Lazarus Gate), the Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland logo, and the word: Gouda.
Unfortunately, the tile panel is damaged. There are cracks in both the upper right and left corners. There is also minor damage in the center of the slab. However, these could be expertly restored, something this object truly deserves. Tile slabs from Zuid-Holland Gouda are rarely seen on the market in this large size.
