Description

This wall charger was made in June 1898 by the Dutch Rozenburg pottery factory in Den Haag (The Hague). The object is model 91, a wall charger with a diameter of 44.3 cm or 17.4 inches wide. The plate is painted with a magnificent floral decoration featuring impressive brown-yellow, swirling striped bands, very typical of Art Nouveau. Yellow flowers and flower buds are also visible. The decoration is perfectly symmetrical. The object is clearly signed with the name of the factory: Rozenburg Den Haag. On the bottom, you can also see the pottery factory’s logo in the shape of a stork, as well as the year mark for 1898 (the crown) and the work order number: 666. The work order books have been preserved in the Municipal Archives of The Hague, where it can be seen that various names are associated with this work order. Willem Hartgring is at the top, suggesting that the decoration was designed by him. However, a signature can also be found on the back of the plate: vw. This refers to Willem Wolbers van Doornen, who is presumably the painter. The wall charger is in an excellent condition. Only on the front, near the right yellow flower, is a small firing defect visible (a small piece of extra white clay, glazed along with the rest, 2 mm wide). The rim also has a minuscule chip that is not visible to the naked eye (see photo, greatly magnified).
