Description

This lidded vase is also known as a ‘Turban pul’. It is Model 25, produced by the Rozenburg factory in The Hague in 1888. These turban lidded vases were designed by Theo Colenbrander. He also designed the decoration, which was given the name ‘Pensees’. Such a small vase often formed part of a set of objects for a cabinet or mantelpiece. This lidded vase is 25.8 cm or 10.2 inches high and 8 cm or 3.1 inches wide. The Pensees decoration is an imaginative design in dark blue, yellow, and black figures against a white background. The vase is clearly signed with the early logo of the Rozenburg factory: WvG. This trademark consisted of the initials of Wilhelm von Gudenberg, the founder of the factory; a flagpole was depicted in the center of the V. Below this, the place name Den Haag (The Hague) was used. Furthermore, you see a D, the year letter for 1888. The five dots refer to an unknown ceramic painter. You can also see the remnants of a shop or auction sticker on the bottom. This vase has had a professional restoration in the past on both the body and the tip of the lid. This is not visible with the naked eye.

This vase is not for sale and belongs to my private collection. I have several turban-style lidded vases (all model 25) with various decors and am looking for new ones to expand this collection. Examples below are all part of the collection of the Mesdag Museum in The Hague.
