Description

This vase was produced by the Dutch pottery firm Wed. N.S.A. Brantjes & Co from Purmerend between 1895 and 1904. It is model 1058, a vase featuring a bulbous body and two distinctive pointed handles on either side of the neck—a design highly characteristic of Brantjes. Measuring 25 cm or 9.8 inch in height and 21.5 cm or 8.4 inch in width, the vase is painted with a white poppy motif. A striking feature is the pattern of dots on the handles within the brown-colored areas; I have not encountered this detail on similar models before.
The vase bears clear markings. On the underside, the words “faïence de Purmerende Hollande” are visible, along with the model number (1058) and the decor number (dec B). The “D” is likely the date letter for 1898. Also discernible, though difficult to read, is an “H” or “Hv,” the signature of an unknown pottery painter (this signature is listed in the book Purmerends Jugendstil Aardewerk 1895-1907 – Supplement).
Unfortunately, the vase is not in perfect condition. As is the case with all examples of this model I have seen, the points of the handles are damaged. They have been neatly repaired, though the breaks remain visible upon close inspection. There is also a crack in the foot ring at the base; fortunately, this is not visible from the front.
