Brantjes Purmerend vase 20 cm, model 1032 high by Chris Lanooy from 1903-1904
Brantjes Purmerend, vase model 1032 of 20 cm high by Chris Lanooy from 1903-1904
Description
This vase was made by the Dutch pottery company Firma Wed. N.S.A. Brantjes from Purmerend, probably in 1903 or 1904. The vase was painted by Chris Lanooy. The vase has a beautiful decor with poppy flowers in a light colour scheme of jade green, light blue, yellow and beige. Dark blue elements are incorporated in the background. What is striking about this vase is that the decor contains many style elements that you would expect from it’s competitor, the pottery company Zuid-Holland from Gouda, rather than from Brantjes. The poppy flower buds, the violin-like flowers at the neck and the hatched lines between the colour areas are strongly reminiscent of the Gouda decors. This object very well reflects the effect that the Dutch pottery factories had on each other in the period at the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century. Chris Lanooy started his career as a pottery painter in The Hague at Rozenburg. Lanooy worked for several years at Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland, before he started working at Brantjes Purmerend in 1903 or 1904 (and from 1906 at Haga in Purmerend).
The vase is 20 cm or 7.8 inch high and 19 cm or 7.5 inch wide. This is model 1032. The vase is well signed with the words: Faience de Purmerende Hollande. Strikingly enough, there is another model number on the bottom of the vase: 1026. This is probably a mistake. The vase is well signed by Chris Lanooy: CJL. The vase is in good condition, except for a hairline crack inside the neck.
The vase is not for sale and belongs to my private collection
