Chris van der Hoef mocha and coffee set by Amphora Oegstgeest, circa 1909

Description

This mocha and coffee set was made by the Dutch pottery factory ‘Amphora Holland’ from Oegstgeest (near Leiden) around the year 1909. It was designed by the famous Dutch designer Chris van der Hoef. The set consists of two model numbers: M286 and M290. Model 286 is a mocha set, consisting of a slender mocha or coffee pot with lid, a small milk jug, a sugar bowl (with lid), and two small tall cups in which mocha (very strong coffee) was served. This mocha set is supplemented by model 290, which consists of 5 ‘ordinary’ coffee cups with saucers. All objects feature a decoration of circles and dots in dark red, ochre yellow, and dark green. Typical Van der Hoef colours, as well as other stylistic elements, such as thin lines around the objects, on the lids of the mocha pot and the sugar bowl, and on top of the handles of the cups. This service consists of 16 pieces. Below is a list, as well as the dimensions and condition of all individual parts.

Model 286:

• Mocha pot – height: 20.5 cm, width: 14.5 (from handle to spout). Condition: a tiny chip on the top rim. Two discoloured crackle lines at the base of the spout. Handle, spout, and lid are intact.
• Sugar bowl – height: 9.5 cm, width: 11.5 cm (from handle to handle). Condition: intact.
• Milk jug – height: 5.6 cm, width: 8.7 cm (from handle to spout). Condition: intact, small spot with slight discoloration on the inside of the base.
• 2 Mocha cups – height 5.3 cm, diameter: 4 cm, width: 6.2 cm (including handle). Condition: one cup is intact, with slight discoloration on the inside of the base; the other cup has undergone professional restoration on the handle.
• There is only one saucer included with the mocha cups, diameter 10.5 cm, condition: intact.

Model 290:

• 5 Coffee cups – height: 4.4 cm, diameter: 7 cm, width incl. handle: 9 cm. Condition: intact. One cup has a tiny chip on the base, another cup has a small discoloration; neither is significant.
• 5 Saucers – diameter 11.5 cm. Condition: intact. Only one saucer has a fleabite on the rim. Another saucer has some discolouration.
