Description

This vase was made by the ‘Holland’ Tile and Faience Factory from Utrecht in The Netherlands. This factory is also known as ‘Mijnlieff’, after owner and founder Jan Willem Mijnlieff. This is model 189, a narrow, tall vase measuring 33.8 cm or 13.3 inch high and 13.5 cm or 5.3 inch wide. The vase features several subtle curves near the base of the neck. The vase is painted with an abstract floral decor in shades of grey, beige, and lilac. This is a very unusual colour combination for Holland Utrecht, the factory that generally produced very colourful pottery during the period 1895–1904. This atypical nature makes this vase very interesting. The vase is well marked. On the bottom, you can see the factory logo and a reference to work order numbers. The model number is also carved into the base of the vase. This object is not entirely flawless. There was a significant firing defect on the body of the vase, where a piece of glaze was missing. This has been neatly restored. Furthermore, the vase has a few chips under the base (not visible when the vase is standing upright) and a very thin hairline crack across the body (see photos, greatly magnified). There is also a small crack in the casting line, near the neck (see photo, greatly magnified). The hairline crack and the small crack are barely visible to the naked eye.
