Pair of Ivora Gouda vases, model 206 with floral ‘kantjes’ decor

Description

These vases were made by the Dutch pottery company Ivora from Gouda around 1920. This is model 206, a pair of bottle-shaped vases with a square base, a round neck, and domed bellies. The vases are painted in a decor called: Mat 1. It is clear where the Ivora pottery painter drew it’s inspiration from. This decor strongly resembles the P-decor of competitor Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland, also from Gouda. And the quality of the painting is indeed on par with that of PZH. But unlike the light, matte decors of PZH, which consist mainly of soft pastel tones, these vases are much more vibrant in colour. The pair of vases is almost the same size. One vase is 31.5 cm or 12.4 inch high, the other 31.3 cm or 12.3 inch. Both vases are 17 cm or 6.7 inch wide. They are clearly signed with the factory name: Ivora Gouda, the decor number: Dec Mat 1. And the signature of AS, an unknown ceramic painter. The model number: 206 is also stamped on the bottom of the vases. The vases are not entirely intact. Both vases have some minor damage at the base. On one vase, this consists of 2 small chips on the front of the foot ring. On the other vase, it is a chip on one of the corners. Furthermore, one vase has a small imperfection in the glaze near the neck (hardly noticeable).
