Description
This wall charger was made by the Dutch pottery factory Rozenburg from Den Haag (The Hague) in 1893. It is a large plate measuring 43.5 cm of 17.1 inch. This is model 91. It was painted by F.J. Mansveld in a beautiful palette of brown, yellow, and black tones, with moss green and blue colours at the heart of the design. The plate bears many characteristics of the designs by Theo Colenbrander, who was the artistic director of the Rozenburg factory up till 1889, but it cannot be said with certainty that he actually created the design or that this design was inspired by his work. The object is clearly signed with the name of the factory: Rozenburg Den Haag. You can also see the stork, the logo, on the back. Furthermore, there is a code: K 634. The ‘K’ is the year letter for 1893, and 634 refers to the work order number. The work order books have been preserved in the archives of the Municipality of The Hague. These identify Mansveld as the painter. The object is in good condition; apart from a few firing defects (pockmarks) in the glaze, no damage or restorations have been observed. This plate originates from the Meentwijck Collection, one of Holland’s most renowned collections.
