Description
This vase was made by the Dutch pottery company Zuid-Holland from Gouda during the period 1902–1907. It is painted with a P/b decor featuring blue-purple flowers. The artwork on this vase is phenomenal and by the hand of Francien Sanderus. The ‘P’ decor was introduced to the market by the Gouda pottery factory in 1901 to compete with the very popular and expensive eggshell porcelain of competitor Rozenburg from The Hague. ‘P’ decors are characterized by the same stylistic elements, such as the hatched colour areas, which are composed of thin, curved lines. The flowers and leaves also feature these fine lines. The composition of the areas on this slender and tall model, with branches and small leaves, is strikingly beautiful. This is model 332, a very rare model measuring 43 cm (16.9 inch) in height and 11.2 cm (4.4 inch) at the base. The vase has a long neck with several bulges at the neck. The object is clearly signed with the words: Made in Zuid-Holland. On the bottom of the vase, you can also see the Lazarus Gate, the logo of the Gouda pottery factory, a reference to the decor: P/b, and the signature of Francien Sanderus: RS. The sticker on the bottom indicates that the vase is part of the Meentwijck Collection, one of Hollands most renowned Art Nouveau and Art Deco collections.
