Description
This ewer was made by the Dutch firm called Wed. N.S.A. Brantjes & Co. from Purmerend between 1895 and 1904. It is model 1023, a jug with a wide bowl and a large handle. The object is 17.5 cm (6.9 inch) high and 15 cm (5.9 inch) wide and is painted with a floral and butterfly motif in a beautiful combination of dark brown, turquoise, blue, and yellow. A similar object is depicted in the book “Purmerends Jugendstil Aardewerk 1895-1907” on page 71. The ewer was painted by Simon Foppen. On the bottom of the object, you can clearly see the logo of the Brantjes company, in the shape of a clog. You can also see an ‘A’ and an ‘E’ stamped on the bottom of the ewer. The meaning of these additional characters is unclear. They could indicate a year code or a decoration code. The factory name is missing from the bottom. The jug is in perfect condition.
