Distel Amsterdam, vase model 187 with sleek symmetrical decoration by Bert Nienhuis

Description

This vase was made by the Amsterdam pottery factory De Distel in the period around 1904-1910. This is model 187, a short vase with a bulbous belly, painted in a sleek, symmetrical design, very characteristic of the work of Bert Nienhuis. However, the colour scheme is remarkable; whereas much of Nienhuis’s work is made on vases with a light background, this vase is strikingly dark: light green and dark blue lines on a dark olive green background, with a slightly glossy finish. The vase is 12 cm or 4.7 inch high and 14,5 cm or 5.7 inch wide and is in excellent condition. The vase is completely intact, except for a few glaze imperfections (also very characteristic of De Distel).
