Description

This jug or ewer was made by the Dutch pottery factory Zuid-Holland from Gouda between 1901 and 1907. The object is model 160, a ewer with a wide body, a large handle, and a small spout. It is 20 cm (7.8 inch) high and 17.5 cm (6.8 inch) wide. The jug is painted with a typical early, floral Gouda design featuring purple violets on a green background. The object is well marked with the words: “Made in Zuid-Holland,” the “Lazaruspoortje” (Little Lazarus Gate, the factory’s logo), and the signature of Theo Leeuwendal: L. The model number of the ewer is carved on the bottom: 160. The object is in good condition. The base ring, handle, and neck are in perfect condition. The tip of the spout is notched (part of the design). The only flaw is a small piece of missing glaze at the base of the handle. This is most likely a firing error.
