Description

This lidded vase was made by the Dutch pottery factory Zuid-Holland from Gouda between 1897 and 1899. The lidded vase is model 27, a vase with a wide base, a rounded belly, and a wide, ribbed opening. It is topped with a lid that tapers to a fine point, topped with a small ball. Including the lid, the vase is 45.5 cm or 17.9 inch in height and 18.5 cm or 7.2 inch wide. The vase is painted with a typical, symmetrical, very early decor featuring light blue poppies and green leaves against a brown background. It features elegant stylistic elements that perfectly complement Art Nouveau (which was very fashionable during the vase’s production). Model 27 is an exceptionally early and rare model that rarely comes to market. The vase is in perfect condition. The lid is not. There is a chip at the bottom edge of the lid, and a hairline crack in the inner rim of the lid, which has been reinforced with a glue-like substance. Neither the chip nor the hairline are visible when the lid is placed on it’s base. A crack is also visible at the very tip of the lid, just below the small ball. However, this is not distracting. The vase is clearly signed by the pottery painter Franciscus Fonville. The factory name is also visible on the bottom of the vase: Zuid-Holland Gouda, the Lazaruspoortje (little Lazarus Gate), the A for this specific decor on this model, and the F for Fonville. Because of the presence of the decor letter A, we know this vase is a very early piece from the factory’s early years, between 1897 and 1899. The stamped number 27 is also visible, which indicates the model number. This covered pot was formerly part of the Meentwijck Collection.
