Description
This vase was made by the Dutch pottery firm Wed. N.S.A. Brantjes & Co from Purmerend between 1895 and 1904. It is a bottle-shaped vase, model 1055, measuring 40.5 cm or 15.9 inch in height and 17.8 cm or 7 inch in width. The vase is decorated with a motif of chestnut leaves and blossoms, rendered in a beautiful colour palette of green, brown, yellow, and turquoise—colours, very characteristic of the Brantjes factory. A similar vase is held in the collection of the Princessehof Museum in Leeuwarden and is featured on page 94 of the book ‘Purmerends Jugendstil Aardewerk’. The vase bears clear markings: the inscription ‘Faiance de Purmerende Hollande’, the Brantjes factory logo (a wooden clog), and the initials ‘NB’. On the underside, there is also a reference to the specific decor: ‘Dec D’. The piece is signed by an unidentified ceramic painter with the initials ‘JN’. The vase is in good condition, though there are a few small losses to the glaze in places (please refer to the photographs). This vase is part of the Meentwijck Collection.
In the webshop, we have three different Brantjes vases of the same model, but with different decorations.
