Rozenburg pottery, vase model 328B with a Crab decoration, 1900 🦀

Rozenburg vase, model 328B, with a wide belly and two handles, decorated with crabs and anemones. Made in July 1900 and painted by D. van Batturn.

Description

This large vase was made by the Dutch pottery factory Rozenburg from Den Haag (The Hague) in July 1900. It is model 328B, a vase with a low, wide belly that tapers into a narrow neck with two handles. The vase is 27 cm (10.6 inch) tall. I love the light colour palette of baby blue and light green. And the red flowers or sea anemones are beautiful, they really pop out! A different crab is depicted on each side of the vase, an unusual but very nice theme for Rozenburg. The bottom of the vase is well marked. You can read the words: Rozenburg Den Haag. The bee symbol indicates the year 1900. Although the work order number is difficult to read, I found the annotation in the archives for model 328 combined with the number 183 engraved on the bottom. This corresponds to work order number 1072. Two names are listed: Batturn and Hakker. Since we know what Hakker’s signature looks like (a combination of Hr), it can be assumed that the signature on the vase – which looks like a butterfly, a V and 2 dots – belongs to D. van Batturn. His name isn’t mentioned in the two Rozenburg books on the market, but it does appear in the list of staff books in which Rozenburg pottery painters recorded their hours (also available through the Hague Municipal Archives). The vase is in excellent condition. Only a few pieces of glaze are missing from the side of one of the handles and right under the belly, near the small foot. These are firing flaws.
The vase is not for sale and belongs to my private collection.
