a pair of Gouda pottery vases, model 7 of 39 cm in height with early Gouda decor of irises
Gouda pottery, pair of vases, model 7 of 39 cm high, in early Gouda decor with irises, from the period 1900-1901.
Description
This pair of vases was made by the Dutch pottery company Zuid-Holland between 1900 and 1901. They have a bottle-shaped design with a rounded neck. It’s striking how thin the necks of these vases are, only 1.5 cm (0.6 inch)! This is model 7 from the Gouda pottery factory Zuid-Holland. One vase is slightly taller than the other, 39.3 or 15.4 inch and 38.5 cm or 15.1 inch respectively. They are both approximately the same width: 12.5 cm or 4.9 inch. The vases are painted with a typical early Gouda design featuring irises. While most Gouda designs are characterized by dark colors (primarily blue, brown, and green), this design is painted in a vibrant palette of yellow, turquoise, green, purple, and dark red. The flowing shapes are also beautiful, perfectly reflecting the prevailing fashion of the time: Art Nouveau or Jugendstil. The vases are well signed. You can see the words “Made in Holland,” the factory logo (Lazaruspoortje), and the signature of an unknown artist: JR. Both vases have the model number stamped on the bottom: 7. Both vases have undergone a professional restoration of the neck (which seems to have been too thin for their own good).
These vases are not for sale and belong to my private collection.
