Description
This ewer or can was made by the Dutch pottery factory Rozenburg from The Hague between 3rd and 9th of September 1898. This is model 393, a design with a square foot, a square belly and square shoulders that end in a square neck with an ear and snout. What is beautiful about this design is that the square surfaces are always at right angles to each other, giving the design a ‘twisted effect’. The ewer is painted with a colourful and floral decoration. You see buds, flowers and tendrils in a great colour combination of brown, yellow and purple. The object has an orange background colour above and cobalt blue below. Within the Rozenburg segment, which is characterised by a somewhat darker colour palet, this is a very cheerfully coloured piece of antique pottery. The ewer is 30.5 cm or 12 inch high and 15 cm or 5.9 inch wide and is signed with the logo of the Rozenburg factory from The Hague. You see the crown, the year mark for 1898 and the work order number: 965. In the archives we see that Jacobus Verhoog painted the ewer. The object is in a neat condition. The ear and the snout are completely intact, only one of the pointy bits at the base has been professionally restored.
