Pair of Gouda earthenware jugs, model 160, with P-decor featuring tulips and a butterfly

Description

This pair of ewers was made by the Dutch pottery company Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland from Gouda in the period 1901-1904. This is model 160, two jugs with a wide base, a bulbous body, and a large handle. The ewers are 20 cm or 7.8 inch high and 17 cm or 6.7 inch wide. Both objects are painted with a magnificent P-decor. This decor was introduced to the market by PZH in 1901 to compete with the very popular, but very expensive, eggshell porcelain of it’s competitor Rozenburg from The Hague. The P decor (‘P’ stands for porcelain) was painted on existing PZH models, such as these ewers, using the same technique as the eggshell decors, employing very thin lines. This decor (P/a) consists of colour fields in blue, green, and turquoise, tulips, and various butterflies. This decor is also known as ‘Kantjes’. Both vases are well marked. On the bottom, you can see the words: Made in Zuid-Holland. The factory logo is in the shape of the Lazarus Gate, and the signatures of the painters. One vase (A) was painted by Adriaan Lansaat. The other (B) by Franciscus Fonville. Both vases are in very good condition. One vase (A) has slight discoloration on the handle and a small hairline crack near the neck (at the handle attachment). The other vase (B) has a small chip on the underside of the foot ring. Notably, this vase also has a green ‘stripe’, a mistake that must have been made during the decorating process.
