Pair of large vases by Brantjes Purmerend, model 503 of 40 cm in height with blue flowers

Description

These vases were made by the Dutch firm Wed. N.S.A. Brantjes & Co from Purmerend in the period 1895-1904. This is a pair of bulbous vases with model number 503 and the vases are approximately 40 cm high. One vase is slightly taller than the other, measuring 40.2 cm or 15.8 inch and 39.8 cm or 15.6 inch respectively. They are 18.5 cm or 7.2 inch wide. The vases are painted with decor ‘A’, a magnificent floral design with blue flowers on a yellow, green and turquoise background. The yellow colour areas feature a pattern of dots. The vases are clearly marked. The largest vase of the pair clearly has the factory logo painted on the bottom: the wooden shoe and the abbreviation NB, for Nicolaas Brantjes. You can also see the words: Faience de Purmerende Hollande. As well as the model number: 503 and the signature of an unknown ceramic painter: HL. The smallest vase of the pair is sparsely painted. You only see a reference to the model number: 503 and the decor: Dec A. And the signature of Jacob Vet: JV. The vases are in good condition. They have both undergone professional restoration. The large one had a chip at the base, the slightly shorter vase had a small chip at the neck. Nothing of this damage is visible now.
