Description

This vase was made by the Dutch pottery factory Zuid-Holland from Gouda in the period 1901 or 1902. It is a bulbous vase with a short base and neck. This is model 3023, measuring 16.7 cm (6.5 inch) high and 15 cm (5.9 inch) wide. The vase is painted with a multi-colored Delft decoration, designed by Henri Breetvelt. Delft inspired decors by Gouda were produced for only a short period by the Gouda pottery factory Zuid-Holland to compete with the popular Delft-ware. Objects appear in the classic white and blue as well as this polychrome decoration, in a beautiful colour palette of brown, yellow and dark green, against a white background. The decoration consists of flowers and birds and was painted by Jacob Schoonhoven, who worked at Zuid-Holland from late 1900 to mid-1902. Before that, he was active as a pottery painter at De Porceleyne Fles in Delft and at Rozenburg in The Hague. The vase has a few little chips on the base; the neck and body are undamaged.
