Description
This wall charger was made by the Dutch pottery factory Rozenburg from Den Haag (The Hague) in December 1895. The object has a diameter of 28 cm or 11 inch (model 202) and is painted with two lizards and a setting sun. The painter is Louis Lacomblé. In the book ‘Rozenburg 1883-1917’, there is a note regarding this name: “This painter does not appear in Rozenburg’s payroll records and is therefore missing from Hageman’s list. Nevertheless, in 1895, under special conditions—instead of wages, he received painting materials—he painted products from this factory and provided them with his signature.” Louis Lacomblé was born in The Hague in 1862 and was active in the circle surrounding the ‘Haagse School’ art movement. Perhaps that is why this plate is atypical for Rozenburg, both in its use of colour and in its style of decoration. But it is certainly beautiful! Moreover, the plate is in excellent condition. No damage was observed, although the glaze in the center of the plate has some small, superficial scratches (see photos, greatly magnified).
